My favourite wargaming period of all is the Late Roman Empire. For our skirmish games we focus on scenarios loosely based on the movie ‘King Arthur’. Bands of nasty Saxons roam the countryside, carrying out acts of unspeakable brutality on the good people of late Roman Britain, only to be punished and generally taught a bit of a lesson in good manners by the local heroes, who manage to uphold the spirit of Imperial law, in spite of the general failure of authority across the rest of the empire.
Here we see one such band of marauding German types, looking as mean as mean can get. You can tell that they are the bad guys by the presence of the bull’s skull standard. Although they possess some jolly nice shield designs, courtesy of those very creative people at ‘Little Big Men Studios’.
The figures themselves come from the SHS (Separate Head System) range, created by West Wind Miniatures.  The figures are an absolute peach to paint and the separate heads give almost infinite variety. Be careful, however, I’m still searching for the head which popped out of my tweezers and rolled under the cupboard underneath my painting table!
